In this quick blog post we are going over on how we can combine gels photography and light painting! Watch the video above if you prefer that media.
To start the gear that we use in this video for the gel section are:
-
3 XPLOR 600’s
-
3 C-Stands
-
2 orange gels
-
1 blue gel
-
3 silver umbrellas
The light painting gear used are:
-
Visual Poi
-
Light Painting Brushes Screw On Color Filters
-
Light Painting Brushes Diamond Plexi
-
Light Painting Brushes White Fiber Optics
-
Ants on a Melon Bit Whip
-
NiteCore MT22C Flashlight
The light setup was the same for all of the photos. We have the blue gelled light in front and raised up, while the orange gelled lights are to the side and behind her. All around around 6 feet from the model. When light painting all of these images I made sure I was out of frame so that when I flashed with the strobes I wouldn’t show up in the picture.

With the visual poi I used the A/B mode to split the colors of orange and cyan. I attached the Visual Poi to an extender and then I started in the middle of her back and rotated in a circle starting in a small circle and slowly getting bigger. This is why I needed the extender.

To create this effect we need to use the Light Painting Brushes Diamond Plexiglass blade and that’s it! All you need to do is place the flashlight in one area, turn it on, turn it off, move to a new space and repeat. Do your best to space out where you want the crown to be in your mind so you do overlap if you want it to look cleaner!

To create this fire like effect I only used the Ants on A Melon Bitwhip and a Screw On Color Filter from Light Painting Brushes. I simply started the exposure then threw the whip around all crazy like to create the effect.

In order to get the halo like effect around Paige I used the white fiber optics from Light Painting Brushes and a blue screw on color filter. Then I simply shook the fiber optics as I went around her body

For this last image I used the screw on orange color filter and the diamond plexi from Light Painting Brushes. Hit her with the flash then made infinity like patterns behind her to make that wispy effect.
